“The best portion of a good man’s life;  his little, nameless unremembered acts of kindness and of love.” ~ William Woodsworth

Random Acts of Kindness in Dominica

I was standing at the top of Pond Case. They were “load shedding” that day and the lights were out. The darkness was palpable; and the sounds of the crack cracks and other night insects were so loud it was over whelming.

The first car that goes by stops to warn me how dangerous it is to hitch hike there! I know they are right but I have no choice but to get home any way I can.

After standing there a while listening to the  unique symphony of the night sounds of Pond Case; I can hear footsteps of more than one person approaching the roundabout and I can make out male voices talking low.

I could hear the voices getting closer; I looked up and I saw 3 young Carib men approaching the roundabout from Layou side.

They looked at me in shock; likely stunned to see anyone standing by the road that late and in the dark and to top it off an older white lady.

A funny look crossed their faces……….  then smiles broke out and “Good Evenings” were exchanged.

I shared my peanuts and they flagged me a ride with a friend.

… only in Dominica!

 EDUCATION

Music in Education

Music seems to be one of the gifts we have been given to make our lives happy and fun filled. Music is in every culture and in every person;  we recognize music while in the womb; our bodies seem to intuitively know that music is therapy.

What better ease of the stresses of daily life then a session of playing, listening or dancing to music.

Mankind has played music from prehistoric times; in that incredibly precise and perfect way of nature or life; this music we love to hear and move to helps to improve our brain power.

Music is an exciting way to raise kids IQ’s.

Music is a great way to help children over come learning challenges.

Music programs in the schools help our kids and communities in real and substantial ways

Music is an integral part of a holistic education.

Healthy Lifestyle Treatment for Healthy Weight

Dr. Dean Ornish is a medical doctor from California who has dedicated his life to diet and lifestyle research and their effect on disease.  He is also well-known as an author advocating lifestyle changes to improve health.

He is the founder, president, and director of the non-profit Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

His first book on lifestyle changes and weight loss called Eat More; Weigh Less talked about a life choice program for losing weight safely while eating abundantly. His concept was radical in those days of dieting and abstaining to lose weight.

Since then governments and international organizations are promoting this concept for the maintenance of a healthy weight.

RESPECT to Rainforest Mushrooms; an organic mushroom farm operating in the rainforests of the buffer zone bordering Mount Trois Piton National Park; a World Heritage Site. This farm is an excellent example of sustainable living in the rainforest. For over 20 years Mathew and Christine Luke have lived and farmed on their property without destroying the rainforests. They are considered Caribbean experts on mushroom growing; having designed a unique growing process suitable for conditions here. Always keen to add to their knowledge Christine has recently returned from a 7 week programme studying mushrooms cultivation at a University in China. ………nuff respect.

What if Dominica was an organic island?

Agricultural productivity would be sustained or improved. From the studies that have been done it seems this is particularly true for small developing nations such as Dominica.

For the last 30 years as the organic agriculture movement grew, common opinion among conventional agriculturalists was that organic farming cannot feed the masses.

Personally, I wondered if this opinion was not strongly affected by the huge funds and lobbying efforts the mega agriculture companies contribute to promoting modern agriculture with genetically modified seed and agricultural chemicals. After all they can afford it; they make millions

Organic experts have steadfastly maintained that organic farming is the answer to sustainable food security. Recent studies have proven them right in country after country.

A study released 11/7/2007 by U.S. Researchers found organic farming can yield up to three times as much food as conventional farming in developing countries, and holds its own against standard methods in rich countries

Rather than the large-scale of use of monoculture crops and pesticides to achieve food security in Africa, organic agriculture increases yields by nearly 130 percent, aids poverty alleviation and offers a sustainable solution to world hunger, according to a new report by UNCTAD.
